2020 – 2021

Our Chosen Charity for 2020/21 is Rutherford School which offers Life Skills for students aged 3 – 25 years of age with profound and multiple learning and physical disabilities.

Rutherford School is an independent special day school registered for 29 pupils aged from three to 19 years with profound and multiple learning difficulties, complex medical needs, degenerative conditions and sensory impairments. The school is part of the Garwood Foundation and opened in 1950. It is situated in a residential area of South Croydon and occupies a building that was originally a large family home that has been significantly extended to include specialist facilities.

Carmel T, Jo J, Beryl D and Margaret Q visited Rutherford School on 11 March 2020 and reported:

“We received a very warm welcome in such a friendly atmosphere, everywhere we were taken.   Sarah, who is responsible for the Visual impaired unit, was our guide and was so enthusiastic about the work that is carried out at Rutherford.  Clearly an inspiring and dedicated staff, who aim to give some sort of relief and offer Life Skills for students aged 3 – 25 years of age with profound and multiple Learning and Physical disabilities.  We toured all the various areas including the Hydro Therapy pool, the Teaching and Learning areas, Music Therapy and the highly technical IT equipment, multi-sensory room , with stimulating bubble lights and where Jo could not help touching the shiny surfaces as we went entered this amazing room.  The equipment that is needed is highly specialised for the work, as the majority of these children are unable to walk or carry out actions that you or I just take for granted.

The four of us were absolutely inspired by what we had witnessed and learnt about the immense need for a specialist school such as this.  We felt very pleased that we had chosen Rutherford School as our chosen Charity for 2020.”
